Web Accessibility Project

Accessibility is important to us, and we are committed to practising what we preach. We are striving to constantly re-evaluate and improve our web accessibility on an ongoing basis, and are upskilling ourselves technically to do so in-house.

We also believe in transparency and accountability, so we’re openly sharing the progress we make here with you so you can see what’s on our radar, and you can contact us about anything else you believe we should be taking steps to improve.

General

  • Our original Jackafal branding colours were:

    • #00839B (with #FFFFFF text) - contrast rating 4.44:1, WCAG Fail

    • #FBF648 (with #000000 text) - contrast rating 18.37:1, WCAG AAA Pass

To improve visual accessibility on our materials and website, we have since changed our colour scheme to:

    • #015F6F (with #FFFFFF text) - contrast rating 7.32:1, WCAG AAA Pass

    • #FBF648 as before, though used primarily for accents

    • Introduction of #F0F8FA (with #000000 text) - contrast rating of 19.51:1

We are in the process of implementing these changes across all branding and documents.

  • To improve options available for users regarding font, spacing and text sizes, we have installed the HikeOrders accessibility widget into our main Jackafal website.

We also installed this onto LearnWorlds platform, but have since received feedback about its full capabilities not being available in the learning content. We are currently investigating options for how to incorporate these features into our learning material. Please contact us if you would like to know more, or require further assistance in accessing these materials while we work on this.

  • At present, while Jackafal tries to use best practices where we can, we have not completed a full accessibility audit.

We have begun investigating and intend to undertake a full audit by the end of 2024, with the results available to publicly view on this page. If you would like to be updated when this is released, please contact us.

Website

  • Since launching our website, we have upskilled our knowledge on accessibility in HTML and have discovered issues with non-sequential heading tags in a number of our blog pages, which affect screen-reader usability.

We are currently in the process of updating these across all of our blog and website materials.

  • We are aware that there is an ongoing problem with an absence of alt texts for our article covers in carousel format, which may cause issues with screen-reader functionality when accessing our articles.

As it stands, this functionality is not provided by our website host and we are unable at the present time to fix this. We are however in talks with them directly about how this could be developed in the future.

eLearning Platform

  • We have investigated the image options in the LearnWorlds creator, and on several, no option for alt texts has been provided in the functionality. We have now found one image option that does allow for alt texts, converted all images in our eLearning platform to this type, and added these accordingly.

  • Until recently, our video captions were integrated directly into videos in order to provide automatic subtitles. However, this posed difficulties for users who wished to turn off subtitles, either due to neurodivergence or learning preference.

We are currently in the process of migrating all video materials in our eLearning courses to host on a separate platform with CC options integrated, so that learners can choose to turn on or off captions at their own discretion.

  • In a number of the inbuilt functions in LearnWorlds, we have discovered that the links and buttons provided do not automatically include aria labels in the code, an element which provides screen-reader users with titles for the interactive elements on the screen.

As far as we are able to edit from the back end, we have now manually added these into the code to ensure easier navigation for users with assistive technology.

  • At present, our eLearning is hosted on LearnWorlds, which contains a number of accessibility features. However, it is not currently WCAG compliant, and we have encountered difficulties in integrating our HikeOrders Accessibility Enabler into this platform.

We have engaged in extensive discussion with LearnWorlds about this, and we are currently exploring the possibility of a range of options including future integrations on the platform, or potentially migrating to another more accessible platform which also meets all of our eLearning functionality requirements. If you would like more information on this investigation, or to offer advice on solutions that have worked for you, please contact us.

  • Due to updates in the functionality of our authoring tool for interactive exercises (Genially), we are in the process of updating all interactive exercises to have better alt text provision for screen-readers, and also updating these to meet our new colour contrast requirements for our branding. This is a work in progress, and will be completed by Autumn 2024. If you require a more accessible version of any interactive resources in the meantime, please contact us and we will provide you with a more accessible alternative.
